How good are your PPC campaigns?

One of the best and quickest ways to make money as an affiliate marketer was to find a high converting affiliate product and set up a pay-per-click (PPC) campaign with Google, MSN or Yahoo to deliver targeted traffic to your affiliate link. As long as you could make a decent margin between your advertising costs and affiliate earnings, this was a highly profitable exercise.

The principle above still holds true but it has become increasingly harder to run profitable PPC campaigns as the search engines have started applying relevancy rules and the whole arena has become more competitive. The net result is that the PPC costs for most affiliate marketers have increased, making it harder to guarantee a decent margin.

What options does that leave available?

1. Give up on PPC and use other traffic sources - Perhaps not the smartest move as PPC is still the best method for delivering highly targeted traffic.

2. Become a PPC expert - Definitely the best option if you have the time and skills to do so. But keeping up to date with all the search engine changes and managing multiple campaigns can be very challenging as well as extremely time consuming.

3. Outsource to PPC experts - Regular readers of this blog and my other publications will be familiar with my preference for outsourcing wherever possible. While I have a decent grasp of PPC, I really do have many better things to do with my time than managing multiple PPC campaigns at optimum effectiveness. The solution for me is to outsource to people who do nothing but run PPC campaigns and who are brilliant at developing optimized campaigns way beyond my own ability level.

And it's not expensive as you might think with a basic PPC campaign beginning at just $99 /mo. Free advertising with a great twist

Every so often you come across a program that really makes you sit up and take notice. This week, I noticed that one of our members was driving a lot of traffic to our site using a new program that I hadn't encountered before (launched August this year) - Post Your Adz.

For once, this is a sales page that completely understates the benefits of the program. The offer simply states that users can place a free ad across the entire network 'just sign up and enter your ad details'. Well honestly, that doesn't appear to offer anything different from dozens of other sites on the internet. So what's different about Post Your Adz?

I persisted with the sign-up process because I had seen with my own eyes how much traffic this program was delivering. On the second page, users are invited to consider the free membership option alongside the gold and platinum offers. Naturally, there are clear differences both in terms of the commission rates payable and the range of ad credits that can be earned. But the cost of $15 /mo and $25 /mo respectively, didn't quite convince me to upgrade.

Then on the third page comes the clincher - a one-time offer to upgrade to lifetime platinum membership for just $47 - not per month but one-time payment. But this also includes a pile of additional bonuses but the one that really caught my eye was the option to send 10 solo email ads. Most sites that offer solo email ads to a membership base charge $35 per time. So not only was I being offered $300 per year core value (3500 monthly ad credits, 60% commissions etc.) but also $350 in solo email ads plus loads of promotional codes for other traffic sites. I bit their hands off.

Update - 24 Hours after running the first of my ten free solo ads, my targeted site has received over 250 hits so far, most staying on the site long emough to have a good look around.

By all means go ahead and sign-up for the free option - it's completely genuine. But my advice is to wait until you are offered the lifetime platinum membership and grab it with both hands. It really is such a good offer to deliver very high traffic volumes that it simply cannot last for much longer.

What is affiliate marketing?
An affiliate marketer is paid a commission for selling another company's product online. This is how the vast majority of products on the internet are sold and most of the time, the person buying the product is unaware that they are buying via an affiliate introduction. The affiliate marketer introduces the customer to the vendor via a unique affiliate link. The vendor conducts the transaction with the customer and rewards the affiliate marketer with a pre-agreed commission for making a successful introduction.

How do I find affiliate products to sell?
There are two main ways you can do this. Firstly, you can join the main affiliate networks and access the range of programs within their stable. We have listed the top networks on our sidebar and also provide you with direct links to these providers via our free toolbar. These are mainly global networks but there are also several program providers who operate solely in geographical territories. It is usually free to join the best affiliate networks.

Not all vendors run their affiliate programs via a central network, instead opting to run their own affiliate program directly. The best way to locate these is while you are surfing the web. When you find a company whose products you would like to promote as an afilliate, scroll down to the bottom of the page and see if they have a link for affiliates. Clicking on this link will provide you with details of their affiliate program and the requirements for joining.

Do I need a website?
Strictly speaking, the answer is no because you can simply promote your affiliate links and customers will be taken directly to the vendor's site. But in practical terms you really should be looking to promote your affiliate links via a website portal of some kind. By starting with a broad industry term you can start to see what people might be searching for in this area (try taking a couple of keywords and typing them into your Google search engine and you'll see how many actual searches there are for that term). You then have to cross check these ideas against what affiliate programs are available in this area. From here, you can really start to build a highly focused, targeted niche.

It's hard work then this affiliate marketing?
Look, anybody who tells you affiliate marketing is easy, is lying, period. It certainly takes quite a few computer hours to research your idea and develop your niche. It also takes quite a few more computer hours to set up your website or blog and keep it up to date. But you really need to look at affiliate marketing as a lifestyle choice. Where else can you:

- Set up a successful business for zero capital outlay
- Run it alongside your full-time job until you are earning enough to quit
- Work from home
- Travel the world and still be able to run your business from a hotel room
- Choose your own hours
- Take time off whenever you want to

While it takes a lot of time and effort to get started, affiliate marketing is the type of business that takes less and less time to run as you go along. It is also not a route to instant riches. You can earn really good money as an affiliate marketer but it takes time to build up your business and get a regular flow of visitors to your site(s). Many aspiring affiliate marketers simply give up too quickly because they are not making instant cash.

How do I get people to visit my site(s)?
Many aspiring and experienced affiliate marketers opt to pay for advertising to generate traffic to their sites and affiliate links. There are several options in this area such as Yahoo and Bidvertiser plus a whole host of smaller players. But given that the type of visitors you want are people who are likely to be searching the internet with an intention to buy, the best source of paid advertising is likely to be Google Adwords.
